The lakes have an abundance of insect life all year round.

The most effective winter patterns are bloodworms. From early spring the chironomid pupae become more prolific, along with small olive nymphs and dries. The gangly hawthorn flies herald mid-April and as spring turns to summer, great sport is had with damsel nymphs and dry mayfly patterns.

The depth of the lakes is fairly uniform, dropping off to about 12 feet in the middle.
